A UTM, or Urchin Tracking Module, is a piece of code that you can attach to your URLs to track clicks.
This is helpful for when you’re driving traffic to your website from different sources. You’ll be able to see which of your sources are responsible for most of your traffic. Which ties in to the 80/20 rule.
If 80% of your traffic is coming from 20% of your sources, you can focus your efforts to drive better results. It’s all about cost per result. And that applies to cost of time, too.
Because time is, by far, your most important asset. You know what they say – you can always make more money. You can’t make more time.
This is why UTM tracking is an essential part of your marketing efforts.
Using A UTM Builder
UTM builders are easy to use. Google Analytics also has its own UTM builder – but most builders come with a problem.
No form of standardization.
To know what’s working, you need to know where your traffic comes from. So you need a good way to report results. An easy way. No confusion.
This can be difficult – especially if you’re working as part of a team.
For example, one day “FB” might sound like a good source identifier for traffic from Facebook. But the next day, you might decide “Facebook” is better. And this makes your month-end reporting a nightmare.
Similarly, different team members may use different source identifiers. So it’s important to have a standard.
You can set this standard manually, and enforce it manually. But that’s not foolproof, is it?
That’s why it’s good to use a link builder like Weberlo. Check the bottom of the next section for more details.
A Different Kind Of Link Builder
The action of creating, shortening and then tracking a UTM link is also inefficient.
The way it’s commonly done is by using a link builder – like ours above or Google’s built-in link builder.
Then taking the long link and shortening it on a platform like Bitly. And then going back to Google Analytics or another platform to track results.
Here’s where Weberlo does things a little differently.
You can build, shorten and track your links all on one platform. Which makes things easier.
A Final Word On UTM’s
UTM’s are great. But they can be a major headache too.
But UTM’s are just the foundation for proper tracking. You also need software to map out and track your funnels, provide you with tips on how to improve your marketing process, etc etc.
As you can see, inefficiency rears its head here again. Switching from platform to platform on a daily basis can quickly waste hours per month – weeks per year.
We plan on implementing all these features into Weberlo, based on user feedback.
